Is fashion photography art? Opinions differ on this question. The fact that Joachim Baldauf has – like no other – influenced fashion photography stylistically and brought a piece of art into the world of glossy magazines – that’s beyond dispute.
Baldauf has the rare gift to capture certain feelings – seemingly invisible moments that render his portraits authentic and fascinating, even when models become actors: like in fashion photography. These are moments of desire, distance, beauty and longing.
While the comprehensive curation of his archive that comprises ten years of male portraiture is still under progress, brand unit and Distanz publishing house have completed a very special book project: The Wallpaper Years. It features 239 magnificent large-size photographs that made Baldauf an indispensable influence on the formative years of Wallpaper magazine.
